Taiwan Election: China Warns Voters and Condemns US Brazen Chatter
(V.News) – China has advised Taiwanese voters to make the “right choice” two days before presidential elections on the self-governing island, which Beijing claims.
A victory for ruling party candidate William Lai will jeopardize relations, China said. It also chastised the United States for its “brazen chattering” after warning Beijing not to inflame tensions before Saturday’s vote.
Whoever wins the election may move the island closer to or farther away from Beijing. Taiwan is a major flashpoint in China’s and the United States’ struggle for Asian dominance.
According to China’s Taiwan Affairs Ministry, if elected, Mr. Lai will continue to push separatist actions.
According to a government statement, “[He] would continue to follow the evil path of provoking ‘independence’ and… take Taiwan ever further away from peace and prosperity and ever closer to war and decline.
Mr. Lai of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has urged voters to “choose the right path” to preserve Taiwan’s sovereignty. Mr. Lai’s major opponent, Kuomintang (KMT) leader Hou Yu-ih, has labeled him a threat to China’s ties.
The majority of Taiwanese consider themselves to be part of a separate nation, although they are not in favor of Taiwan declaring independence from China.
Mr. Lai was barely ahead in the presidential election
Chinese officials say the island is a breakaway province that will eventually be part of the country, and they have not ruled out using force to accomplish this. Mr. Lai was barely ahead in the presidential electeon when polls closed on January 2. Parliamentary elections are also being conducted.
China’s appeal to voters came as it asked the United States to avoid commenting on the election. Beijing’s foreign ministry offered a harsh rebuke to Washington after it announced plans to send an unofficial mission to Taiwan following the vote. According to a spokeswoman, the US administration must “refrain from intervening in the elections… to avoid causing serious damage to US-China relations.”.
The People’s Republic of China “expresses… resolute opposition to the American side’s brazen chattering about the elections in the Taiwan region.”. Beijing has stated that Taiwanese voters will have to choose between peace and war in the next elections.
Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Joseph Wu, criticized China on Thursday for its “repeated interference” in Saturday’s referendum. “Frankly, Beijing should stop interfering with other countries’ elections and focus on their own,” Mr Wu wrote on X, the social site formerly known as Twitter.
