Drew Barrymore Dropped As National Book Awards Host After Her Talk Show Resumes During Strike
NEW YORK – Drew Barrymore has been snubbed as the host of the forthcoming National Book Awards presentation only one day after taping her first episode since the Hollywood writer’s strike began.
“The National Book Awards is an evening dedicated to celebrating the power of literature, and the incomparable contributions of writers to our culture,” said the National Book Foundation, which presents the award, in a statement Tuesday. “In light of the announcement that’The Drew Barrymore Show’ will resume production, the National Book Foundation has rescinded Ms. Barrymore’s invitation to host the 74th National Book Awards Ceremony.”
The awards ceremony, dubbed the “Academy Awards of the Publishing World,” is set for November 15.
Because daytime talk shows are controlled by a different Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Radio and Television Artists contract that was updated and ratified last year, Barrymore’s resumption of her CBS talk show does not inevitably pose complications with the actors guild, which is also on strike. However, at least three writers on Barrymore’s show are members of the Writers guild, which has been on strike since early May. On Monday, those writers demonstrated outside the CBS Broadcast Building.
“The only people I know for certain who will not return are the three WGA writers.” “I can’t really speak for the rest,” Chelsea White, one of the show’s writers, said on the picket line. First and foremost, this is clearly much broader than ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ and its authors. We’re out here with our union, feeling terrific and excited to always stand with our union.”
Drew Barrymore has been snubbed as the host of the forthcoming National Book Awards presentation only one day after taping her first episode since the Hollywood writer’s strike began.
Members of both guilds chastised Barrymore for crossing the picket line, as did Colson Whitehead, Alexander Chee, and other authors who questioned whether she should continue as host of the National Book Awards.
The fourth season of the chat show is set to premiere on September 18. Barrymore’s representative has yet to immediately reply to a request for comment. On Sunday, Barrymore announced on Instagram that she was “making the choice to come back for the first time in this strike for our show, that may have my name on it but this is bigger than just me.”
“I own this choice,” she continued, adding that they will abide by the strikes by not discussing or promoting strike work.
In her post, she also mentioned writers.
“I want to be there to provide what writers do so well, which is a way to bring us all together or help us make sense of the human experience,” she wrote.
Barrymore dropped out of hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards in solidarity with the writer’s strike (she eventually won best host at the event, which eschewed the live part in favor of a clip-heavy pre-taped presentation). In other literary news, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos backed out of May’s PEN America Gala, where he was set to receive a Business Visionary Award, citing a desire not to be distracted from “the important work that PEN America does for writers and journalists” (Netflix is one of the studios and streamers on the other side of the table from the striking workers).
The National Book Foundation has long worked to elevate the book awards’ visibility, and Barrymore would have been its most well-known host in years. When she was announced, the chair of the National Book Foundation’s board of directors praised her efforts as host of this year’s National Book Awards.
“Throughout their careers, Drew Barrymore and Oprah Winfrey have each demonstrated their enduring belief that books have the power to change readers’ lives — by opening doors, sparking conversations, and building community,” David Steinberger said in a statement, referring to Winfrey, who will be the ceremony’s guest speaker.
On Tuesday, the foundation attempted to refocus attention on the writers.
“Our commitment is to ensure that the focus of the Awards remains on celebrating writers and books, and we are grateful to Ms. Barrymore and her team for their understanding in this situation,” according to the statement.

Taylor Port Launches Sentinels Vintage Port
Taylor Port has announced the launch of Taylor’s Sentinels Vintage Port, a blend of wines made from its assets in and around the Pinhao Valley.
The four estates—Terra Feita, Junco, Casa Nova, and Eira Velha—are all located inside the original 1756 border and have received Feitoria status, the highest certification for Tayor Port vineyards.
Sentinels derive their name from the granite pillars known as “Marcos de Vitoria” that guard the demarcation line that separates the top-grade Port sections and is home to numerous Taylor Port mansions. From 1758 to 1761, 335 stone stakes were constructed to designate this region.
Fruity
The Pinhão Valley style is rich, deep, and delicious, despite differences in altitude, orientation, sun, wind exposure, and grape variety mix throughout the estates.
Sentinels Vintage Port’s mix is based on ‘parcel selection’, a laborious procedure of selecting wines from specific plots on each estate. Like Taylor’s Single Quinta Vintage Ports, Sentinels Vintage Ports will be created in years when no traditional Taylor Port Vintage is produced.
Taylor Port Thrilled
These vintages produce wines that have the potential to age and improve in the bottle while remaining approachable and delicious while young.
Thrilled Taylor’s managing director, Adrian Bridge, said the company is “thrilled” to unveil the line.
He stated, “This publication demonstrates our dedication to creating excellent Ports that honour the legacy of our ancient lands. The Taylor’s Sentinel blend honours our heritage while demonstrating our commitment to quality.
Taylor’s head winemaker, David Guimaraens, described it as a “tribute to the unique terroir” of the Pinhão Valley.
He stated, “Each estate adds its own flavour to the blend, resulting in a nuanced and harmonious wine. It is a true expression of Taylor’s long legacy and precise craftsmanship.

Man Creates Candy Cane Car to Spread Christmas Cheer
In a delightful display of holiday spirit, a local resident in North Providence, Maine, has transformed his vehicle into a candy cane delight that is capturing hearts and spreading Christmas Cheer.
Over the past 15 years, Dave Clayman has transformed a simple 1991 Toyota Camry into a rolling holiday icon that captivates everyone who encounters it.
It’s wrapped in $3,000 worth of reflective tape, the same kind used on trailer trucks. Whether parked at a mall or cruising down the highway, you can’t miss it with its candy cane decorations.
This whimsical project started with an unusual idea. When an old exercise bike landed in Clayman’s possession, he mounted it on top of his car instead of letting it gather dust in his garage.
“There’s nothing like working out in the fresh air,” Dave said. That quirky addition quickly drew eyes, inspiring him to keep going.
The car features homemade rockets built from trash cans and salad bowls, candy cane-themed hubcaps, and candy cane lights dangling from the mounted exercise bike.
The Candy Cane Car cost Clayman $3,000
To top it off, it boasts a PA system and a custom horn, making it a true sensory experience.
The candy cane car has now become a local landmark every Christmas. Parked outside Clayman’s house, it’s a favourite backdrop for people snapping photos or simply stopping to admire it.
Some visitors even share stories of seeing the car as a child, reminiscing about how it’s been a beloved part of their neighbourhood for years.
“When people see it, their mood amplifies,” Clayman explained. “If they’re happy, they become happier. If they’re upset, well, they sometimes get angrier.” But for the most part, he estimates that over 96% of people love the festive car, particularly around Christmas.
Clayman said he used to wear a Santa costume when riding in his festive car for years. A few years ago, he bought a Grinch costume and never looked back.
“It’s like a state of euphoria. Every time I get behind the wheel and people see it,” he said. “Anything that people are in a better mood, it seems to make you in a better mood. It’s a labor of love you got to be committed to it.”

Amazon Strike Called By Teamsters Union 10,000 Walkout
An Amazon strike has hit facilities in the United States in an effort by the Teamsters union to pressure the corporation for a labour agreement during a peak shopping season.
The Teamsters union told the Associated Press that Amazon delivery drivers at seven facilities in the United States walked off the job on Thursday after the firm failed to discuss a labour contract.
According to the union, Amazon employees in Teamsters union jackets were protesting at “hundreds” of additional Amazon facilities, which the union billed as the “largest strike” in US history involving the company.
The corporation, which employs over 800,000 people in its US delivery network, stated that its services will be unaffected.
It was unclear how many people, including members of Germany’s United Services Union, participated in Thursday’s demonstration. The Teamsters union reported that thousands of Amazon employees were implicated in the United States.
Amazon Strike at 10 Locations
Overall, the group claims to represent “nearly 10,000” Amazon strikers, having signed up thousands of people at roughly ten locations across the country, many of whom have joined in recent months.
The organization has claimed recognition from Amazon going on strike, claiming the firm illegally neglected its obligation to bargain collectively over salary and working conditions.
The Teamsters is a long-standing US union with nearly one million members. It is well-known for securing lucrative contracts for its members at companies like delivery behemoth UPS.
Most of the Teamsters’ Amazon campaigns have concerned drivers working for third-party delivery companies that partner with the tech behemoth.
Amazon denies that it is liable as an employer in those circumstances, which is a point of legal contention. In at least one case, labour officials have taken a preliminary stance in favour of the union.
Stalled Contract Negotiations
Amazon employees at a major warehouse on Staten Island in New York have also chosen to join the Teamsters. Their warehouse is the only Amazon facility in the United States where labour officials have formally recognized a union win.
However, the Amazon strike is because contract negotiations have not progressed since the 2022 vote. It was not one of the areas scheduled to go on strike on Thursday.
Amazon, one of the largest employers in the United States, has long received criticism for its working conditions and has been the target of activists seeking to gain traction among its employees.
