ATLANTA, Ga. – The ex-wife of R&B superstar Usher is pushing for the drainage of Lake Lanier, where her son died 11 years ago.

Tameka Foster, a fashion designer, has gathered over 2,500 signatures for her online petition urging officials to “drain, clean, and restore” Lake Sidney Lanier to improve safety and remove hazardous debris and other impediments.

Kile Glover, her 11-year-old son with Bounce TV creator Ryan Glover, died in July 2012 after being struck by a personal watercraft while floating on an inner tube on the lake.

“Draining, cleaning, and restoring Lake Lanier is not only necessary, but it is also an opportunity to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives and prevent further tragedies,” Foster said in her change.org petition, which she shared on her Instagram page.

Lake Lanier, about an hour’s drive northeast of Atlanta, contains about 60 square miles (155 square kilometers) and has depths of up to 160 feet (49 meters). It’s more than just a vacation spot for millions of boaters, fishermen, and other tourists yearly.

According to the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper conservation group, the lake provides drinking water for around 5 million people. The Buford Dam supplies hydroelectric electricity at the lake’s southern end for the Atlanta metropolitan region.

Lake Lanier was built in the 1950s by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps’ district office in Mobile, Alabama, which still operates the lake, has yet to respond to phone and email requests for comment on Thursday.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, hundreds of boat collisions have occurred on the lake over the last three decades due to heavy traffic. Between 1994 and 2018, the government reported more than 170 boating and drowning deaths.

Foster married Usher in 2007 and divorced two years later.
