Donald Trump Jr. Arrives in Greenland With a Message From His Father: “We Will Treat You Fairly.”
(VOR News) – President-elect Donald Trump told the people of Greenland that “we’re going to treat you well,” during his eldest son’s visit to the mineral-abundant Danish territory housing a sizable U.S. military base, so fuelling rumours about possible acquisition of the territory by the future U.S. government.
Later, during a news conference, the president-elect said that “we require it for national security” and said he would not discount the prospect of using military action or economic coercion to obtain Greenland.
Over a backdrop of fjords and snow-capped mountains, the president-elect earlier uploaded a video of a jet adorned with the Donald Trump insignia landing in Nuuk, the capital of the Arctic enclave.
Don Junior and I are going to Greenland,” Donald Trump said.
“It has been received well,” he added. They demand protection, security, authority, and peace as does a free planet! One must perform this contract. Create a Great America Once Again. Reversing glory to greenlands! Then supporters shared a video showing Donald Trump interacting with locals.
Declared in a statement, the Greenlandic government said they would not interact with Donald Trump Jr. and that his visit was “as a private individual” instead of an official one.
One person familiar with the preparations—who lacked permission for public comments—said Trump Jr. was in Greenland for a day trip to gather video for podcasts. Involved in his presidential transition team, Donald Trump’s eldest son has grown to be rather active in his father’s political company.
The Associated Press was informed by the permanent secretary of the ministry of sovereignty and international affairs, Mininguaq Kleist, that officials had indicated that Donald Trump Jr. would be present for four to five hours. Kleist stated that neither the representatives of the Greenlandic government nor Trump Jr.’s staff requested a meeting.
Still, the visit had a political meaning. The Arctic is strategically important for the United States, China, Russia, and other countries, so the president-elect has shown a want to acquire it. He said this during his first term running for president.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Tuesday that Greenland would shape its own future and described the United States as Denmark’s main ally.
“We must remain calm under Donald Trump and adhere to our principles.”
Greenland, which lies between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, is the largest island in the world with 80% of its surface covered in ice. Living on the independent territory are about 56,000 people, most of whom are Indigenous Inuit.
Prime Minister Múte Egede of Greenland promoted in his New Year’s speech the country’s freedom from Denmark’s colonial past. Egede claims he is not interested in Greenland’s admission to the United States and that the island cannot be bought.
Independence has taken the stage in the run-up to the Greenlandic legislative election. Though it must happen by April 6 at the latest, no exact date has been set. Greenlandic member of the Danish parliament Aaja Chemnitz told the AP she was not interested in Greenland’s admission to the United States, a view shared by her compatriots.
“Most people do not desire it,” she said. Some people find it really rude, in my opinion. The way one is executed and the simple assertion that one may purchase from another country.
Previously a Danish colony, Greenland was granted self-governance in 1979 and is run by its parliament. Copenhagen still controls Greenland’s foreign and military affairs. Under a treaty with the United States and the American military station, Washington has jurisdiction over the region’s defence.
Denmark’s King Frederik X has claimed sovereignty over Greenland and the Faroe Islands, an autonomous archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean sandwiched between Iceland and Norway. The king’s power mostly has symbolic meaning.
By royal proclamation last month, the king changed Denmark’s coat of arms to include Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Greenland is represented by a silver bear sporting a crimson tongue. According to the royal declaration, “visually symbolising the legitimacy and sovereignty of the state and the king” the royal coat of arms has been “since 1194”.
The king said in his New Year’s speech, “We are all united and each of us is dedicated to the Kingdom of Denmark,” then added, “extending to Greenland.”
Early attempts in the late 19th century to buy Greenland, close to the North American continent, During his first term as president, Donald Trump considered buying Greenland. After the prime minister turned down the offer, he cancelled an August 2019 planned trip to Denmark.
Declaring, “The United States of America deems the ownership and control of Greenland essential for national security and global freedom,” Donald Trump revived the issue last month after announcing his choice for U.S. ambassador to Denmark.
