Victoria Beckham has spoken candidly about their husband David’s highly publicized alleged adultery, describing it as the “hardest period” of their marriage.
The couple has previously denied rumors that he had an affair during his 2003 season with Real Madrid.
In a new Netflix documentary, the former Spice Girl explains, “It felt like the entire world was against us during that time.”
“Here’s the thing – we were competing against each other, if I’m being completely honest.”
In the Wednesday-released documentary titled Beckham, the couple does not disclose the incident’s specifics.
However, Victoria stated, “You know, up until Madrid, it sometimes felt like it was us versus everyone else. But we were united, connected, and we had each other.
“However, when we were in Spain, we did not feel like we had each other. That’s a shame.”
She continued, “I cannot even begin to describe how difficult and traumatic it was for me.”
“It was a nightmare,” she said of the press attention after she and the children moved to Spain to join her spouse. From the moment we opened, the press arrived in vehicles and followed us wherever we went.
“It was an absolute spectacle; when the circus comes to town, it’s very entertaining, right? Except when you’re in it.”

When asked if she resented her husband at the time, the singer-turned-designer responded, “If I’m being completely honest, sure I did.
“If I’m being completely honest, it was probably the most unhappy I’ve ever been in my entire life.”
In the series, the ex-England and Manchester United midfielder—now owner of Inter Miami—also addressed how the speculation around his extramarital affairs affected him and his family.
“There were some horrifying tales that were difficult to handle,” he said. “It was the first time in our marriage that Victoria and I were placed under such pressure.
“At the time, I believe we both felt that we were not losing each other but drowning.”
He added, “I honestly do not know how we got through it.”
The Independent noted in its review of the documentary series that its creators “keep it vague” when discussing David’s alleged infidelity.
The newspaper’s four-star review stated, “Posh and Becks are willing to discuss anything, including their fights with Fergie, crude chants, THAT red card, sarongs, and matching purple wedding attire, but director Fisher Stevens remains cordial when addressing more sensitive issues.”
The Guardian also gave the docuseries four stars, describing it as “the candid, riveting truth about the football player’s life.”
Rebecca Nicholson opined that this star-studded documentary series is entertaining, gossipy, and full of forthright, entertaining interviews. Each episode passes quickly.
The Telegraph awarded a perfect score for a “superb, intimate, and at times heartbreaking portrait of an unexpectedly complex man.”
Benji Wilson of the paper wrote, “Beckham eschews the trend of sports documentaries that are merely PR exercises by tracing David’s career and family life.”
On Tuesday, the Beckhams, who wed in 1999, and their four children attended the London premiere of the series.
