Polaris, an Australian metalcore band, recently revealed with “shattered hearts & the deepest sorrow” that their guitarist Ryan Siew died on June 19. The reason for death was not disclosed.
“He was 26 years old, and for 10 incredible years he was our best friend and artistic soulmate,” Daniel Furnari, Jake Steinhauser, Jamie Hails, and Rick Schneider posted on Instagram on June 27. “Those years will never come close to being enough.”
The members of the group then shared how they would remember Siew.
“He was kindhearted and clever, funny, brave, creative, and talented beyond all measure,” they added. “He admired art and beauty in all of its forms.” He enjoyed good cuisine and good company. He was a huge fan of Harry Potter, psych thrillers, and crime documentaries. He loved music in more ways than you can fathom and spoke its language in ways only the most unique among us do.”
And the artists said he’ll always have a special place in their hearts.
“Most importantly, he loved and adored his family and friends,” they continued. “He was also greatly admired and loved by many.” Ryan, we will love and miss you for the rest of our lives, and we will never be able to fill the void you have left.”
Furnari, Steinhauser, Hails, and Schneider also extended their sympathies to Siew’s family and requested privacy as they mourned his death.
“Our hearts are with his family first and foremost, but also with all those whose lives he touched,” the statement said. “We ask that you please respect Ryan’s family’s wishes for privacy at this time, as well as give us, our team, and our family the space to grieve and attempt to heal from this immeasurable loss.” We know you will be grieving alongside us and our community, and we will support one other through this.”

Before ending their message, the artists addressed it to Siew, writing, “May you be at peace.”
In an Instagram post, Polaris announced a week ago that it was canceling the remaining dates of their European Summer gigs owing to a “serious personal crisis in our family.” On June 8, the band announced that Siew would miss their gig at the Rock for People festival because he was “taking some time off the road to deal with some ongoing health issues.”
Siew had previously discussed his health battle, including in an Instagram post in January after a month away from the platform.
“I’ve had to step away and spend most of 2023 working on myself and for the first time in as long as I can remember,” he wrote beside a photo of himself in a hospital bed in his Jan. 26 message. “I’m relieved that I’m no longer on antidepressants and no longer plagued by constant brain fog and lethargy.” Even though I’ve had a few health scares that have been pretty sobering.”
He was also upbeat about his rehabilitation, saying, “Between all that, I think I’m back on track to be the best version of myself.” I’m learning new things, expanding, and, most importantly, improving.”
Siew, according to his YouTube page, began playing guitar in 2008. According to the Los Angeles Times, Polaris formed in 2012, and Siew joined the band the following year. Following the release of two EPs, Dichotomy and The Guilt & The Grief, in 2013 and 2016, the band released their first studio album, The Mortal Coil, in 2017.
Their second album, The Death of Me, will be released in 2020, and they released their latest song, “Inhumane,” in May. Fatalism, the band’s third album, will be released in September.
Polaris’ music will carry on and Siew’s legacy.
“Ryan, you may be gone, but your music and impact will live on far longer than any of us,” Schneider wrote in his Instagram tribute. “Rest in peace, my brother.”
