Los Angeles — Mariah Carey’s mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, died on the same day, the singer said Monday.

“My heart is devastated since I lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in an unfortunate turn of circumstances, my sister died on the same day,” the Grammy-winning singer said in a statement.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away,” the message added. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

According to the Times Union, Alison, who was entirely estranged from Mariah, died on Monday at the age of 63 from organ function issues while in hospice care.

People Magazine originally broke the story of their deaths and Mariah’s comments.

Patricia was a Juilliard-trained opera soprano who served as an inspiration to Mariah from an early age.

“I would sing little tunes around the house, much to my mother’s delight.” “And she was always encouraging me,” she said in her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.”

Patricia previously married Alfred Roy Carey, the singer’s father. The “Vision of Love” singer’s parents split when he was three. Mariah grew up in Suffolk County, Long Island, and largely resided with her mother following her parents’ divorce. Her father died of cancer in 2002 at the age of 72.

Carey recounted her tumultuous connection with her mother and sister in her biography, in which she said that she and her mother frequently argued, causing her to experience “so much pain and confusion,” and accused her sister of putting her in dangerous circumstances as a youngster.

“Like many areas of my life, my relationship with my mother has been fraught with paradoxes and competing truths. “It’s never been just black and white; it’s been a whole spectrum of emotions,” Carey writes in the book. “Our relationship is a thorny web of pride, grief, guilt, gratitude, envy, adoration, and disappointment. A complex love binds my heart to my mother’s.”

Carey remained in contact with her mother and even recorded a duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus” for the singer’s second Christmas album in 2010.
