Police in New Mexico have reported the deaths of 95-year-old Gene Hackman, a two-time Oscar-winning actor, and his wife, 65-year-old Betsy Arakawa, at their Santa Fe residence. Local sources confirmed that their bodies, along with their dog, were discovered at the scene.
Hackman was found near the kitchen, while Arakawa, a classical pianist, was in a bathroom. Authorities stated there were no visible injuries but described the circumstances as suspicious, warranting further investigation. The cause of their deaths remains undetermined.
Hackman’s three children from his previous marriage shared the heartbreaking news in a statement. “Millions admired him for his incredible acting career, but to us, he was Dad and Grandpa. We are devastated and will miss him deeply,” said Elizabeth, Leslie, and Annie Hackman.
According to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the home on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park on February 26, 2025, around 1:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Hackman, Arakawa, and their dog deceased.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza said during a press conference that it appeared the couple had been dead for “some time,” though he declined to estimate how long.
“There are no immediate indications of foul play, but it hasn’t been ruled out,” Mendoza noted. “We’re conducting a thorough investigation and keeping all possibilities open.”
German Shepherd Found Dead
A detective reported that Arakawa’s body showed signs of decomposition, particularly in her hands and feet, while Gene Hackman’s condition appeared similar. Near Arakawa’s head, investigators found a portable heater that may have tipped over if she collapsed.
Prescription pills were found scattered on the bathroom counter near Arakawa. Their German Shepherd was discovered dead in a bathroom closet nearby. Hackman wore grey track pants, a blue long-sleeved shirt, and brown slippers. Sunglasses and a walking cane were beside him, suggesting he may have fallen suddenly.
The home’s open front door raised concerns, leading investigators to conduct a detailed review. However, there were no signs of forced entry, theft, or disorder inside. Utility workers examined the property and found no gas leaks, while the fire department ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning. Toxicology and carbon monoxide tests are part of the ongoing autopsy process.
Two maintenance workers on-site told police they occasionally worked on the property but rarely interacted with the couple. They mostly communicated with Arakawa via phone or text. Their last contact was about two weeks before the discovery.
In a 911 call obtained by the BBC, the caller described the scene emotionally, saying, “No, they’re not moving,” and repeatedly asked dispatchers to send help quickly. The caller, who looked through a window to report the situation, expressed disbelief and frustration.
Gene Hackman’s 40 Year Career
Gene Hackman, whose acting career spanned more than 40 years, met Arakawa in the mid-1980s while she was working part-time at a California gym. During his career, he won two Academy Awards: Best Actor for The French Connection (1971) and Best Supporting Actor for Unforgiven (1992), directed by Clint Eastwood.
Hackman’s Hollywood breakthrough came in his 30s with a nomination for Bonnie and Clyde (1967), followed by another for I Never Sang for My Father (1970). He gained further acclaim for roles in Mississippi Burning (1988), Superman (1978), and more than 100 other films. His final performance was in Welcome to Mooseport (2004) before retiring to New Mexico for a quieter life.
Fans and colleagues have been mourning the loss of Hackman and his wife, remembering his extraordinary contributions to film and his lasting legacy.
