Canadian Rapper Tory Lanez Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison
Tory Lanez, a Canadian rapper, was sentenced to ten years in jail on Tuesday, more than seven months after he was convicted of killing fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion during an argument in 2020.
Judge David Herriford handed down the punishment to the 30-year-old rapper, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, after a delayed hearing in Los Angeles Superior Court.
On December 23, a jury convicted Lanez guilty of carrying a loaded and unlicensed firearm in a vehicle, assault with a semiautomatic handgun, and negligently discharging a firearm.
Lanez was accused of shooting Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion, 28, after a pool party in the Hollywood Hills in July 2020, hurting her foot. During the two-week trial, she testified that the shooting was preceded by an argument that got heated when the two began insulting each other’s music careers.
Megan Thee Stallion, born Megan Pete, required surgery and spent four days in the hospital before being able to walk again thanks to physical therapy.
Tory Lanez to appeal conviction
She did not attend the sentencing hearing because she could not bear being in the same room as Lanez, but she did write a statement that was read in court on Monday, according to the New York Times.
“He not only shot me, but he made a mockery of my trauma,” according to the statement. “This is a statement for all survivors that their lives matter and that there is no tolerance for the torture that goes along with violence.”
Jose Baez, a defence counsel for Lanez, told reporters outside the courthouse that he thought the sentence was excessive and that Lanez would appeal his conviction, claiming that he had not gotten a fair trial. Lanez’s solicitors had asked for probation.
“I’ve seen homicide cases, other cases where there’s a death and the person still gets less than 10 years,” Baez added. “It’s just another case of someone being punished because of their celebrity, someone being used as an example.”
Megan Thee Stallion received Grammy awards in 2021 for best new artist, best rap performance, and best rap song. She has also received six additional nominations.
After the verdict in December, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon, whose office prosecuted the case, stated that women, particularly Black women, are hesitant to report crimes such as assault and sexual violence because they are typically not believed.
“The fact that Ms. Pete is a successful entertainer has brought the spotlight on the important issue of violence against women,” he said after the verdict.
