Ford recalls around 85,000 Explorer Police Interceptor Utility cars because the engines may fail prematurely, potentially causing a fire.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Friday that the recall applies to vehicles with 3.3L hybrid or petrol engines from 2020 to 2022.

According to the NHTSA, if an engine fails, considerable amounts of engine oil or fuel vapor may be released into the underhood region, migrate to and accumulate near ignition sources, potentially resulting in an underhood fire, localized component melting, or smoke.
According to the government, as of July 9, 13 incidents of under-hood fires in North America were caused by engine block breaches on Explorer PIU cars equipped with 3.3L engines manufactured prior to June 2, 2022. There have been no fires arising from engine block breaches on non-police cars.
According to the report, Ford has received no reports of accidents or injuries due to this issue. The company will send a letter to vehicle owners informing them that the inquiry is ongoing and that they will be contacted as more information is available.

Ford will also warn owners in the letter to safely park and turn off the engine as soon as possible if they hear unusual engine noises, experience an unexpected torque loss, or notice smoke coming from the engine compartment.
