“We can confirm a British soldier has been arrested and charged for second degree murder by the Toronto Police in Canada,” a British Army spokeswoman said.
“At this tragic time, our thoughts are with the victim’s family.”
“It would be inappropriate to comment further because the matter is under investigation by Canadian authorities.”
Mr Sheffield, a Manitoba businessman, was in Toronto with colleagues for work meetings and team building events, according to his buddy Justin LeBlanc of the Winnipeg Free Press.
Mr Sheffield, he added, worked really hard and developed a wonderful firm, but “never lost sight of the people around him.”
The company Mr Sheffield created has paid tribute to him on social media.
“His absence is deeply felt across the community, our company, and his vast network of friends and colleagues,” a NextGen Drainage spokeswoman said.
“Brett’s passion for making everyone feel valued and cared for will inspire us in the future.”
