NEW YORK — Bob Edwards, who hosted National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” for just under 25 years and was the baritone voice that informed many Americans what had transpired while they slept, has died.

Bob died on Saturday at the age of 76. NPR provided no further information.

He co-hosted “All Things Considered” with Susan Stamberg shortly after joining NPR in 1974 and was the inaugural anchor of “Morning Edition” in 1979. He left NPR after being replaced on the show in 2004 – a programming change that sparked protests from thousands of listeners — and joined SiriusXM satellite radio.

Many listeners assumed Bob was older than he was due to his rich, commanding voice. “His was the voice we woke up to,” Stamberg stated.

For 12 years, he had regular chats with veteran sportscaster Red Barber, which inspired Edwards’ book “Friday with Red: A Radio Friendship.”

Edwards would inform listeners about well-known people celebrating birthdays. He subsequently discovered that his announcement of First Lady Rosalynn Carter’s birthday astonished and rescued her husband, President Jimmy Carter, who heard Bob while jogging and had forgotten the occasion.

“I like sitting at the mic and being on the radio,” Bob stated shortly before quitting NPR. “That’s still a kick.”

He wrote a biography, “A Voice in the Box: My Life in Radio,” and a history of the medium, “Edward R. Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism.”

According to NPR CEO John Lansing, Edwards’ former colleagues and listeners will remember him with gratitude.

“Bob Edwards understood the intimate and directly personal connection with audiences that distinguishes audio journalism from other mediums, and for decades he was a trusted voice in the lives of millions of public radio listeners,” Lansing said in a statement.
