Blake Lively will not be seen on the Met Gala steps this year.
While the Gossip Girl alum is known for turning heads on the red carpet, Blake has confirmed she will not attend the 2023 Met Gala on May 1. However, the 35-year-old actress, who recently welcomed her fourth child with husband Ryan Reynolds, will be watching this year’s red carpet looks, which will be themed “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
“I will be watching,” she told reporters at the reopening of Tiffany & Co.’s flagship store in New York City on April 27, joking that she’ll wear her cherished 2022 Met Gala ensemble “on my couch on Monday.”
Blake wore an Atelier Versace gown with exquisite detailing and a huge bow to the event last year. The ribbon was loosened on the carpet, revealing green cloth in a stunning metamorphosis.
It was an iconic and systematic ensemble that paid multiple homages to New York City (and the Met Gala theme “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”).
During the event, Live From E!’s Zanna Roberts Rassi explained that the outfit represented the changing color of the Statue of Liberty over time.
Blake revealed to Live From E! that the Empire State Building inspired the pattern on her bodice, and the crown of the Statue of Liberty inspired her tiara.
“The transformation is basically from the brown dress to the oxidized green, which is the color of Lady Liberty,” Zanna explained. “And then there’s this train on the dress, which is the hand-painted foil and embroidered celestial map that you’ll find on the top of Grand Central Station’s ceiling.”
But the references to New York did not end there. Blake revealed to Live From E! that the Empire State Building inspired the pattern on her bodice, and the crown of the Statue of Liberty inspired her tiara.
“I arrived in copper, and then it patinaed to a green,” she explained before pointing to the dress’s bodice and stating, “This is architecture from the Empire State Building.” There are numerous little references.”
Indeed, every detail appears to have been noticed.
Blake even requested a jewel for each window on the Statue of Liberty.
“She has 25 windows, so I was like, Lorraine [Schwartz], can you put 25 stones?” Blake revealed to Vogue at the time. “She asks, ‘Who’s going to count the stones?'” ‘Me,’ I said. “I am a Virgo.”
