Author Salman Rushdie Awarded Prestigious German Prize For His Literary Work
The event’s organizers announced on Monday that Salman Rushdie, a writer, has received a prestigious German medal for his writing and his bravery and upbeat outlook in the face of ongoing peril.
According to the German Book Trade Peace Prize, the British-American author would receive the Prize on October 22 in Frankfurt.
In his writing, Salman “combines narrative vision with constant literary innovation, humour, and wisdom,” according to the judges. He discusses the invincibility of the individual’s spirit of resistance and the ferocity with which aggressive governments obliterate entire societies.
Rushdie was brutally stabbed last August while performing on stage at a literary event in New York.
Salman Rushdie, a writer, has received a prestigious German medal for his writing.
The German judges stated, “Despite tremendous bodily and psychological repercussions that he is now grappling with, he continues to write—in an innovative and genuinely human way. Salman Rushdie is honored for his fortitude, optimistic outlook on life, and the fact that he enhances the world via his enjoyment of storytelling.
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran had deemed blasphemous sections related to the Prophet Muhammad in Rushdie’s 1988 book “The Satanic Verses.” Salman had been traveling freely for years before last summer’s stabbing, but Khomeini issued an edict the next year ordering his execution, driving him into hiding.
Since 1950, the German Prize, worth 25,000 euros ($27,350), has been given out.
