(LOS ANGELES) – After Ashton Kutcher and his wife Mila Kunis penned letters urging mercy for their former “That ’70s Show” co-star and convicted rapist, Danny Masterson, Ashton Kutcher resigned as chairman of the board of an anti-child sex abuse organization that he co-founded.

On Thursday, Kutcher resigned from the board of Thorn, an organization he co-founded with then-wife Demi Moore in 2009.

“After my wife and I spent several days of listening, personal reflection, learning, and conversations with survivors and the employees and leadership at Thorn, I have determined that the responsible thing for me to do is resign as Chairman of the Board, effectively immediately,” Ashton wrote in a letter to the board. “I cannot let my blunder detract from our efforts and the children we serve.”

On September 7, a Los Angeles judge condemned Masterson to 30 years to life in prison. In May, the actor was found guilty of raping two women in 2003 while co-starring on the Fox sitcom “That ’70s Show” alongside Ashton and Kunis.

Letters to the judge from Kutcher, Kunis, and others were made public the day following the punishment. In his book, Kutcher described Masterson as a man who treated others “with decency, equality, and generosity.”

The next day, Ashton and Kunis apologized in an Instagram video for penning the letters, which, according to Ashton, “were intended for the judge to read and not to undermine the testimony of the victims or retraumatize them in any way.”

In his resignation letter, originally reported by Time magazine, Kutcher expressed “my heartfelt apology to all victims of sexual violence and everyone at Thorn who I hurt by what I did.”
