Canada Will Reduce Immigration Targets For 2025 As Trudeau Acknowledges His Policy Failed
TORONTO – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Thursday that Canada will dramatically reduce the amount of new immigrants allowed into the nation, conceding that his administration failed to strike the appropriate balance following the outbreak.
Trudeau’s Liberal government faced criticism for its intention to admit 500,000 additional permanent residents over the next two years. On Thursday, he said that next year’s aim will be 395,000 new permanent residents, with the figure dropping to 380,000 in 2026 and 365,000 in 2027.
“In the tumultuous times as we emerged from the pandemic, between addressing labor needs and maintaining population growth, we didn’t get the balance right,” Mr. Trudeau said.
“Immigration is essential for Canada’s future, but it must be controlled and it must be sustainable.”

Trudeau, who is under pressure from inside his party not to seek a fourth term, has faced growing criticism for his immigration policy and the harmful impact of population increase on housing affordability.
He stated that his government would restrict the number of immigrants Canada accepts over the next three years, thereby freezing population growth for the following two years. In April, Canada’s population numbered 41 million. The population was 37.5 million in 2019.
“Even Justin Trudeau wants to close Canada’s borders,” Donald Trump tweeted on social media Thursday, calling for stronger border policies in the United States.
Trudeau stated that Canada must stabilize its population growth so that all levels of government can adjust to health care, housing, and social services to accommodate more people in the future.
Trudeau also blamed others.
“Far too many corporations have chosen to abuse our temporary measures, exploiting foreign workers while refusing to hire Canadians for a fair wage,” Mr. Trudeau explained. “Under the supervision of provinces, some colleges and universities are bringing in more international students than communities can accommodate, treating them as an expendable means to line their own pockets.” That’s unacceptable, and something has to change.”
According to Immigration Minister Marc Miller, decreasing immigration numbers will help to alleviate the country’s housing problem.
He also acknowledged the shift in public sentiment towards immigration.
“That volume that we have put forward is of concern,” Miller informed the audience.
Miller stated that the government recognizes Canadians’ pressures and must change its programs accordingly.

“We are an open country, but not everyone can come to this country,” he said, emphasizing that Canada will continue to welcome visitors and that the government’s immigration targets remain ambitious.
Trudeau’s government has long emphasized Canada’s immigration policy and how it outperforms comparable countries in welcoming newcomers and integrating them into the economy.
“He has destroyed our immigration system through his own personal incompetence and destroyed 150 years of common sense consensus with the Liberals and Conservatives on that subject,” according to Poilievre.
