Los Angeles — Adan Canto, a Mexican musician and actor best known for his appearances in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Agent Game,” and the TV show “The Cleaning Lady,” has died. He was 42.
According to Jennifer Allen, Adan died of appendiceal cancer and chose to keep his illness hidden.
“Adan possessed a depth of spirit that few people knew. “Those who saw it were changed forever,” Allen said. “He will be greatly missed by so many.”
Adan, who was reared in Texas and born in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, started his career as a singer-songwriter in Mexico City at 16. He later pursued acting, making his television debut in the 2009 Mexican series “Estado de Gracia.” His American debut came later in Kevin Williamson’s 2013 Fox drama series “The Following,” starring Kevin Bacon.
His prominent performances include Vice President-elect Aaron Shore in “Designated Survivor,” Colombian politician Rodrigo Lara Bonilla in “Narcos,” and mutant Sunspot in “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” Canto appeared in Halle Berry’s directorial debut, “Bruised,” and “Agent Game.”

He also directed his debut short film in 2014 and a sequel in 2020, a daring western starring Theo Rossi.
Canto was playing Armand Morales on Fox’s “The Cleaning Lady” at his death, which is presently filming its third season. He could not participate in the production owing to illness, but he hoped to return later in the season.
Canto had a big smile and a raucous chuckle. His friends described him as having a tenderness and humility that contrasted with a leading man’s massive stature and square jaw.
Kiefer Sutherland, who costarred with Canto on “Designated Survivor,” paid tribute on his Instagram page.

“It seems like I’ve been writing too many pieces like this one lately, but I’m devastated by Adan Canto’s death. “He was such a wonderful spirit,” Sutherland said in a post accompanying a photo of them on site. “As an actor, his drive to do good, be great, and then do better was truly admirable, and he will be sorely missed. I am heartbroken for his wife, Steph, and their two young children. Adan, may you rest peacefully.”
Canto is survived by his wife, Stephanie Ann Canto, and his two children, Roman Alder, three, and Eve Josephine, 18 months.
“Forever, my treasure Adan, see you soon,” his wife posted on her Instagram page.
