Starlink Service on iPhones
Apple, SpaceX link up to support Starlink satellite network on iPhones

Apple has collaborated with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and T-Mobile to integrate support for the Starlink satellite network into its latest iPhone software, providing an alternative to its existing satellite communication service.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the companies have been testing iPhones equipped with Starlink’s technology, developed by Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. A recent iPhone software update, released Monday, includes support for this feature.

The partnership has raised eyebrows, as T-Mobile had previously identified Samsung devices, such as the Z Fold and S24 models, as compatible with Starlink. On the other hand, Apple already offers a service through Globalstar Inc. that enables users to send texts and contact emergency services outside of cellular coverage areas.

T-Mobile has launched an early version of Starlink service for its customers, with a small group of iPhone users participating in a beta test this week. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Musk noted that the current Starlink technology supports images, music, and podcasts, with plans to introduce video support in future updates.

T-Mobile Starlink Beta

Beta participants received text notifications from T-Mobile stating, “You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected by texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.” Beta users also accessed a new toggle in their iPhone settings to manage the satellite feature.

Apple declined to comment on the matter, while T-Mobile confirmed the testing involves select optimized smartphones, with plans for broader support across most modern devices. Additionally, the beta program has been extended to certain Android 15 users. SpaceX has not responded to inquiries.

Since Apple introduced satellite features in 2022 through its partnership with Globalstar, speculation has grown about whether it would support competing networks. Following Apple’s initial announcement in 2022, Musk mentioned on X that Starlink had engaged in “promising conversations” with Apple regarding satellite connectivity.

When a T-Mobile iPhone is in an area without cellular service, Starlink devices will prioritize connecting with SpaceX satellites. Users can enable satellite texting via a menu option under the Globalstar service or for emergency communication through Apple.

Starlink on Other Carriers

Currently, Starlink’s service is limited to text messaging. However, SpaceX and T-Mobile have plans to expand the offering to include data transfers and voice calls. Unlike Apple’s Globalstar service, which operates in multiple countries, the program is only available in the United States. SpaceX has expressed interest in making Starlink accessible to other carriers worldwide.

A key difference between the two satellite services lies in their operation. Apple’s feature requires users to manually point their device toward the sky to establish a connection, while the Starlink service is designed to function automatically, even if the iPhone remains in a pocket.

Both satellite features aim to provide connectivity in areas without cellular coverage, such as remote hiking trails. These services are not intended for use in locations with available cellular networks. Apple’s satellite support is compatible with most recent iPhone models, and plans are to extend the feature to its Ultra smartwatch later this year.

T-Mobile updated its website to inform beta testers of iPhone compatibility with iOS 18.3. However, the current number of participants remains limited, with a broader rollout expected in February. While Apple’s iOS 18.3 announcement highlighted AI improvements and bug fixes, it did not mention including Starlink support.

SpaceX sought approval to begin beta testing the service earlier this week, and the Federal Communications Commission granted conditional authorization in November for its satellites to supplement T-Mobile’s network.
