Shifty Shellshock, Crazy Town Frontman Dead at 49

Shifty Shellshock, Crazy Town

The lead singer of the rap rock band Crazy Town, Shifty Shellshock, who was responsible for the smash hit “Butterfly,” has died, he was 49 years old. Shifty Shellshock was best known for the 2001 single Butterfly, which was a US number one hit, and reached number three in the UK.

Seth Binzer aka Shifty Shellshock, better known by his stage name Crazy Town, was born in 1995. He and DJ Paul Oakenfold had a hit with the club single Starry Eyed Surprise. He struggled with addiction throughout his life, addressing his condition on reality shows such as Celebrity Rehab and its follow-up, Sober House, the BBC reports.

On Monday, June 24th, they discovered his body at his Los Angeles residence. The exact reason for the demise is still unknown.

Brett Mazur, Shellshock’s Crazy Town co-founder, was someone he first met in 1992. By 1999, the band had changed their name to Crazy Town and welcomed Rust Epique, James Bradley Jr. (as JBJ), Doug Miller, Adam Goldstein (aka DJ AM), and Antonio Lorenzo “Trouble” Valli, who had previously played in the band under the Brimstone Sluggers. Crazy Town opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers on tour soon after the release of their debut album, “The Gift of Game,” in November 1999.

Crazy Town hit “Butterfly”

In October 2000, Crazy Town dropped “Butterfly”—the third track off “The Gift of Game.” As Shellshock raps, “Come my lady, come-come my lady, You’re my butterfly, sugar baby,” the song deftly combines elements of both rap and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Pretty Little Ditty” sample.

As the band’s most successful single, the song spent two weeks (not consecutively) at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, according to NBC.

The band disbanded after Crazy Town’s “Darkhorse” (2002) failed to inspire the same level of passion as their debut album. Shellshock went on to release solo material, including a collaboration with Paul Oakenfold on the No. 41 single “Starry Eyed Surprise” in 2002.

After releasing his debut solo album, “Happy Love Sick,” in 2004, Shellshock had considerable success in Europe.

Shellshock had been candid about his battles with addiction and made appearances on multiple reality shows centered around the subject, such as “Celebrity Rehab” (which aired on VH1) for two seasons and “Sober House,” the spinoff for the same network, for two seasons.

He went into a coma and lost consciousness in 2012; he eventually woke up and made a full recovery. In 2022, he was most recently taken into custody for Dui.

Phoenix, Halo, and Gage are the musician’s children.

Cancelled tour! The move comes after videos emerged of Farrell lunging at Navarro during a Friday concert in Boston, hitting him with his shoulder before swinging at the guitarist with his right arm. Navarro is seen extending his right arm to keep Farrell away before he is hauled away by others on stage. The show ended soon after, and the band apologised.

The band is most known for the edgy, punk-inspired singles “Jane Says,” “Been Caught Stealing,” and “Just Because” from the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the alternative rock and grunge music movements were emerging. It had three Top 5 hits on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay list.

“Perry’s frustration had been mounting, night after night, he felt that the stage volume had been extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band,” Etty Lau Farrell, Farrell’s wife, wrote in an Instagram post Saturday morning.

She stated that her husband had tinnitus and a sore throat, and “by the end of the song, he wasn’t singing, he was screaming just to be heard.” She stated that her spouse later broke down “and cried and cried.”

The band’s “Imminent Redemption” tour, which featured opening act English rock band Love and Rockets, began in early August and was scheduled to end on October 16 at the YouTube Theatre in Los Angeles.

When British rock band Oasis announced a reunion tour this week, there was an expected rush for tickets to the 17 shows. Perhaps predictably, there have been concerns and frustrations about the ticket-buying process due to high demand.

Tickets went on general sale on Saturday at 9 a.m. GMT, and it took a little while for social media users to start complaining about inflated prices, long wait times, and error warnings from ticketing company Ticketmaster.

“‘In demand standing ticket’ is just a standard standing ticket except double the price,” Darragh Moriarty, a Dublin city councilor, wrote on X (previously known as Twitter).

Moriarty also shared a screenshot in his article displaying an In Demand Standing Ticket with fees priced at €415.50 ($459.61).

“To clarify, Ticketmaster does not set ticket prices,” a spokeswoman told CNN on Saturday.

Ticketmaster’s official website states: “Promoters and artists set ticket prices.” Prices may be fixed or market-based. Market-based tickets are identified as ‘Platinum’ or ‘In Demand.'”

Stephen Lowell of London stated on X that he had waited five hours for tickets only to receive the notification, “Your session has been suspended.”

“The website did not crash,” a Ticketmaster official told CNN on Saturday.

Oasis will begin their tour on July 4 with performances in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh, and Dublin. Ticketmaster’s website states that the tour “will be one of the biggest live moments and hottest tickets of the decade.”

A presale went live for those who got an email confirming their access. Oasis warned on its Instagram page that tickets would “be allocated on a first come, first served basis” and that “success in the ballot will not guarantee tickets.”

Buyers have frequently expressed dissatisfaction with purchasing tickets for large concert events. In November 2022, Ticketmaster and its parent firm, Live Nation Entertainment, faced public scrutiny for how they handled the enormously popular Taylor Swift Eras Tour.
