LONDON — Tuesday morning attacks in Nottingham, England, resulted in the death of three individuals on the streets after the suspect ran over three pedestrians with a van, leaving one critically injured, according to police.
Police said they suspect a 31-year-old man detained on murder charges acted alone. Detectives from Nottinghamshire Police were attempting to determine a motive while collaborating with counterterrorism officers.
Three persons lost their lives in this horrifying and tragic occurrence, according to Chief Constable Kate Meynell.
Three persons were slain, and two were University of Nottingham students.
The school said, “We are shocked and devastated by the news.”
Students have canceled Tuesday night’s graduation ball.
Police did not say how the three victims died, but they did say the first incident happened around daybreak when two bodies were discovered on a downtown street. Later, a third body was discovered on an additional street.
About 90 minutes later, when the van hit pedestrians at a street corner and then left, witnesses described a horrible spectacle in the city’s heart.
At 5:30 a.m., Lynn Haggitt was traveling to work when a white van drove up next to her. She observed the driver glance in his rearview mirror and notice a police car coming up slowly from behind without turning on its lights. Then, according to her, the driver accelerated and ran into a guy and a lady at a street corner.
Three persons were slain, and two were University of Nottingham students.
Haggitt told reporters, “He went straight into them, he didn’t even bother to turn.” “There was such a bang, I wish I never saw it, it’s really shaken me up,” the man said after the woman jumped onto the curb and the man leaped into the air.
Then, she continued, the vehicle sped through the city’s core while being pursued by police.
According to her, the injured man was brought to his feet despite appearing to have a head injury. The woman appeared to be fine as she sat on the sidewalk.
According to authorities, the third pedestrian was struck on the same roadway. Three were admitted to the hospital, and one was in serious condition.
We think there is a connection between these three incidents, and we have a man in custody,” Meynell added. “We are working with Counter Terrorism Policing to establish the facts, as we would normally do in these types of circumstances while keeping an open mind as we investigate the circumstances surrounding these incidents,” the statement reads.
The suspect was apprehended in a fourth location after the attacks in at least three different locations.
Three persons were slain, and two were University of Nottingham students.
University of Nottingham student Kane Brady claimed he woke up to chants of “armed police” and what sounded like a gunshot outside.
He claimed to have observed police using stun weapons and dragging a man out of the van before pinning him to the ground.
He told GB News, “I witnessed him getting caught, attempting to resist. I observed a large knife being dragged out of the van when it was opened, and the police immediately closed both highways at that point.
Images revealed cracks in the van’s windscreen and dents in the hood.
Rishi Sunak, the prime minister, described the occurrence as terrible and requested that authorities be allowed time to investigate the crime.
Sunak added, “My thoughts are with those who have been hurt, as well as the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives.”
Images on social media showed police in the city center standing near cordons, some armed with weapons.
The city’s tram system said that all services had been halted.
A 350,000-person metropolis, Nottingham is located 110 miles (175 kilometers) north of London.
